How does Canada’s educational copying environment compare to that of similar jurisdictions? To what extent is the fundamental purpose of copyright—encouragement of learning—advanced by provisions of copyright law that accommodate multiple copies for classroom use? On what basis have infringement exceptions been held to apply or not apply to classroom copying? This presentation explores these questions by considering statutory and case law pertaining to multiple copying for educational purposes in Canada and four other common law countries.
