    Abstract
This partially glazed terracotta sculpture of St. John the Baptist in the desert as a child, now found in the Museo Bandini in Fiesole, is likely to have been made for domestic devotion, given the small scale. Period texts confirm that images such as this one were used to educate children about religious stories and give them models for proper behavior.
