    Abstract
This wooden crucifix, currently in San Carlo dei Lombardi, was originally in Orsanmichele, where it was revered as a miraculous statue by the mid fifteenth century. Is was said to have spoken to St. Antoninus, who prayed in front of this work; other accounts say that it was carved from the wood of a miraculous tree. The crucifix, like many other polychrome works, was later covered with a dark brown layer to simulate bronze. After cleaning, the original flesh tones, white for the loin cloth, and traces of gilding were revealed. The blood gushing from the wound in Christ's side was modelled in pastiglia and then painted red. Photograph(s) licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License
