Giovanni della Robbia
MetadataShow full item record
This altarpiece is one of a pair made for the observant Franciscan friary of San Girolamo in Volterra. The work, in glazed terracotta, is generally attributed to Giovanni della Robbia, but Pope-Hennessy sees it as the work of the elderly Andrea della Robbia, with the assistance of Giovanni and others. As Pope-Hennessy points out, the artist imitated a drawing by Filippino Lippi in the Galleria Corsini, Rome (or a lost painting for which the drawing was preparatory).
