    Abstract
This trecento crucifix, made of painted wood, is in Santissima Annunziata in Arezzo, but seems to follow Sienese models and so may be by a Sienese sculptor or by a local Aretine imitating a Sienese example. The refined, elongated features, symmetrical locks of hair, and low hanging body from painfully attenuated arms all mirror a crucifix in the Osservanza at Monte Oliveto Maggiore, but the loincloth is much more elaborately folded here. This intricate loincloth and the refined features serve to elevate Christ, who is, unusually for this period, alive, with his eyes barely open and lips parted to reveal his teeth, perhaps uttering his last words. The thin, racked body, ribs protruding and gaping wound emphasize his human suffering. Photograph(s) licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.
