Andrea della Robbia and Workshop
MetadataShow full item record
This pair of glazed terracotta sculptures forming and Annunciation were originally made for the Observant Franciscan church of Santa Maria in Fontecastello (near Montelpulciano, where they are currently housed in the Museo Civico). They have been traditionally placed flanking the glazed terracotta altarpiece of God the Father with adoring angels, also by Andrea della Robbia, which was made to frame a venerated older fresco of the Madonna and Child. The patrons are shown diminutive and kneeling in the socles below. Unlike Andrea della Robbia's other Annunciation pairs, which are free-standing, in-the-round sculptures, these are in high relief, emerging from niches. It is also unusual to have the Virgin on the left. Perhaps these differences are related to the exigencies of the original placement, the details of which are unknown.
