    Abstract
This magnificent image of the Madonna enthroned with baby Jesus regally dressed and blessing, comes from a church in Castello di Barbialla (in the Val d'Evola) and is currently in the Cathedral of Volterra. The Madonna and Child look outward, rather than at eachother, and the mood is much more formal than in the intimate half-length images that were made for domestic devotion. The pose and features of the Madonna are similar to Jacopo della Quercia's Madonna della Melagrana (in Ferrara). This wooden sculpture looks to have been repainted at a later date.
