Coronation of the Virgin with Saints

This glazed terracotta lunette on the façade of Ognissanti in Florence was made by Benedetto Buglioni in c. 1510. The central figures of God the Father crowning Mary Queen of Heaven are very similar to those in the lunette of the same subject that Benedetto made ar around the same time for the Ospedale del Ceppo in Pistoia. Here, however, the composition has been expaded to include ranks of music-making angels and seven saints (appropriately for the church of Ognissanti, which means all saints). Bulgioni's blue is lighter than the richer royal Della Robbia blue and his white has a less brilliant opacity. Photograph(s) licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.
