Tomb of Aldovrando Cavalcanti
MetadataShow full item record
This is the tomb of Aldovrando Cavalcanti (d. 1279), a Dominican friar who was prior of Santa Maria Novella in the mid thirteenth century and then later was bishop of Orvieto (and is thus shown in his bishop's mitre) as well as vicar of Pope Gregory X. It is unclear to me whether the stone tomb has terracotta inserts, or whether the orange-red visible is surviving paint. Regardless, this sculpture, like all others at the time, would have been originally at least partially polychromed. The tomb is on the wall in the right transept of Santa Maria Novella in Florence.
