    Abstract
A possibly earlier small painted wood crucifix was affixed to an early sixteenth-century oil painting of the mourning St. Mary and St. John the Evangelist. Though this adds a narrative context, the calmness of the mourners suggest that this is not a work meant to give a sense of the agony of the moment but rather to elicit devotional meditation. This work is housed in the Museo Civico in San Gimignano. Photograph(s) licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.
