Development of an Auditory Coding System for Youth Sport

Extensive research supports the salience of social identity in youth sport contexts (e.g., Bruner et al., 2017, 2018). Importantly, this research has been limited to self-report methodologies. With this in mind, a new approach was taken to observe previously inaccessible behaviours by youth athletes in naturalistic sport settings (i.e., dressing room, travel to and from the activity). An EAR (electronically activated recorder) was used to record athlete dialogue in such settings. Thus, the purpose of this project was to develop an auditory coding system in order to derive meaning from athlete interactions captured through audio recordings by the EAR.
