Abstract

This half-length glazed terracotta Madonna is currently housed in San Concordo in Contrada in Lucca, along with similar half-length terracotta images of St. Romano and St. Pellegrino, which presumably originally flanked the Madonna, when all of the works were probably made for San Romano in Lucca, the observant Dominican church that had many works by the Della Robbia. Giancarlo Gentilini, among other scholars, has suggested that these works were executed by Baccio da Montelupo, who had carried out commissions for Savonarola. Others, however, have suggested that this could be a later work of Andrea della Robbia, and the Virgin in particular does resemble closely such works as Andrea's Annunciate Virgin in the Musée Jacquemart André. The solemn, heavily-draped, and simply-posed Madonna, all in white glaze except for her eyes, could be seen as an expression of Savonarolan piety.
