Abstract

This glazed terracotta sculpture of St. John the Baptist is not freestanding, but in high relief, attached to a fragmentary blue ground, and thus must be the remnant of a larger work, very probably an altarpiece, as the Baptist kneels in reverence, perhaps to the Madonna and Child. It was possibly made for Santa Maria in Fontecastello, an observant Franciscan house for which the Della Robbia made a number of sculptures, and is currently housed in the Museo Civico in nearby Montepulciano.
