Christ during the Flagellation
Christ on the Column
This small wooden statue is one of a pair depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ. The statues flank the large crucifix in the last chapel on the left of the central nave of San Francesco d'Assisi in Matera. Christ is shown bound to the column, during the Flagellation. The gold loincloth on the matching sculpture and the crucifix provides a sense of narrative continuity. Photograph(s) licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.
