Abstract
This work, originally made for San Francesco in Sargiano is currently housed in the Museo Nazionale, Arezzo. The coat of arms with a flagel show that this was made for person or group who followed the devotional practice of self-flagellation. The frame, figures, and richly detailed landscape (both sculpted and painted flat) were all done in glazed terracotta, but the figures' flesh and hair and the apparition of Christ on the Cross were left unglazed and must have been originally cold-painted. The plethora of animals is appropriate to a narrative about Francis, who composed hymns to nature and preached to the birds.
