Abstract

This marble relief (now in the main chapel of Santissima Trinità in Viterbo), now completely monochrome, was likely originally partially gilded and painted, as there is little or no indication of carved pupils in the eyes and no text on the open book. Giusy Zevolini has attributed the work to the Tuscan sculptor Isaia da Pisa and proposed that this tympanum was originally a part of a large sculptural assemblage, rising atop a sculpted marble tabernacle also attributed to Isaia da Pisa and currently in the Museo Civico in Viterbo. The rilievo schiacciato angel heads and clouds surrounding Christ are reminiscent of Donatello's work. Photograph(s) licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.
