St. Thomas Aquinas
This wooden sculpture had been in a later period covered in gesso and painted a fake bronze colour, with an inappropriate inscription on the open book. When restorers removed these later additions, the sculpture was left as bare wood, as the original polychromy did not survive. The subject is St. Thomas Aquinas, beatified in 1323, which was likely the occasion for making this sculpture. The work's original location is unknown. It is currently housed in the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Siena. Photograph(s) licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.
