Abstract

This splendid glazed terracotta niche is over the portal of the oratory of the Madonna delle Grazie in San Giovanni Valdarno. Filippo Buondelmonti and Jacopo Salviati, prominent patrons with ties to Pope Leo X, commissioned the work. The rich and varied colors (including purple as a substitute for red, unobtainable in glazes), combination of high relief figures with a flat glazed landscape background, and sheer complexity of the composition, busy with flowers, textures, and patterns, and framed by angels, fruit trees, and grotesques, are typical of Giovanni della Robbia's most ambitious works.
