Abstract
This altarpiece is one of a pair made for the observant Franciscan friary of San Girolamo in Volterra. The inscription identifies the date as 1501 and the patron as Michelagniolo di Nicholao Ceheregli. The work, in glazed terracotta, is generally attributed to Giovanni della Robbia, but Pope-Hennessy sees it as the work of the elderly Andrea della Robbia, with the assistance of Giovanni and others. As Pope-Hennessy points out, the artist imitated figures from Filippino Lippi's paintings, including the kneeling naked man in the foreground (from the Brancacci Chapel) and St. Jerome (National Gallery, London).
