Abstract

This poorly preserved painted stucco relief is one of many half-length images of the Madonna and Child that were made for domestic devotion in the fifteenth century. This intimate composition, with the faces of the figures pressed together and the baby's arm outstretched to embrace his mother, is loosely based on works by Donatello such as the Pazzi Madonna in Berlin. These reliefs were most commonly made of terracotta or stucco, relatively inexpensive media that could be used for reproductions with molds, which is very likely to have been the method used here. This relief is housed in the Museo d'Arte Sacra in San Gimignano. Photograph(s) licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.
