Abstract

This lunette, which is over the door on the exterior of the church of San Giuseppe in Lucca, is made of glazed terracotta, but the probably local artist(s) who made it were clearly not privy to the Della Robbia recipes and techniques. Here, unlike the Della Robbia works, the glazes are diluted transparent colours, inconsistently applied, and the borders between the pieces fired separately are readily apparent. Giancarlo Gentilini deems this a work of the mid Cinquecento by Lucchese ceramicists, attempting to fulfill the great demand for glazed terracotta works that the Della Robbia had created.
