Abstract
This large painted wood crucifix, made in the early trecento (c. 1320), follows the conventions established by Giovanni Pisano, including the narrow waist, twisted body, and arms stretched painfully high above Christ's head. (See, for example, Giovanni's crucifix in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo in Siena). In this crucifix and the many of others of this popular type from the same period, the thin, wracked body with copiously bleeding wounds conveys the pathos of Christ's suffering, but the face is, though sorrowful, elevated, with an almost classical structure and a magnificent centrally parted mane of luxuriant hair. The polychromy is old (possibly quattrocento), but not original, as a few pieces missing from the loincloth reveal a different colour underneath. The figure of Christ was carved from one piece of wood. This work is currently in the Pinacoteca Nazionale, Siena, in deposit from San Martino a Cellole, Castelnuovo Berardenga.
