Abstract

This glazed terracotta lunette by Giovanni della Robbia is the only one still in situ of the three lunettes that once ornamented San Jacopo a Ripoli in Florence. Giovanni often used a more varied palette but here made white figures against a blue ground, as his father Andrea and great uncle Luca had often done before him, adding colour only to Dominic's lily and the fruit garland that frames the whole composition. The figures have long, lean proportions that seem inspired by the sculpture of Verrocchio. The face of St. Dominic, for example, looks very similar to Verrocchio's Christ in the Doubting Thomas group on Orsanmichele. (Agnolo di Polo, a student of Verrocchio, collaborated with Giovanni della Robbia on terracotta works in the early Cinquecento, which is when this sculpture was made.)
