Abstract

This glazed terracotta altarpiece, now housed in the Museo Civico in Montepulciano, was made for the Cappella dei Carceri in the Palazzo Pubblico. The heavy, broad figures are typical of Andrea della Robbia's late works, around 1515, a style which some scholars associate with the Scuola di San Marco, given the documented Savonarolism of Andrea della Robbia and his children. The modelling and mistakes in the glazing suggest participation by Andrea's workshop. Photograph(s) licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.
