Abstract

This Baroque Altarpiece of St. Anthony of Padua was commissioned by the Frati Minori in the 17th century. St. Anthony is placed in a rounded niche, painted bright blue and decorated in three dimensional gold stars. Although it first appears that St. Anthony is dressed in simple Franciscan robes, closer inspection reveals that the brown fabric is overlaid with an elaborate gold design. The rope around his waist is also covered in gold. The saint holds a modern silver lily branch in his left hand. On his right palm he holds out a book, upon which the Christ Child stands, making the sign of the blessing. Both St. Anthony and Christ are crowned with golden halos. The statue was restored in 1999.
