Abstract

This stone relief carving of the Madonna and Child is the only known work by Fabrizio da Trani. The poses, long robes, and the baby's elongated bodily proportions take inspiration from the Byzantine icons that survive in the area. However, most of these icons are made of wood and are flat painted panels or carved with less detail than this stone relief. The Baby Jesus points to the monogram of Jesus (IHS), which he holds in his left hand. The work was originally located in the Monastery of Jesus and Mary, but was relocated to the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in 1819 and is now in the Museo Diocesano in Trani. The epigraph below reads "FRABICIVS DE TRANO ME INCISIT AT PINXIT." Photograph(s) licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.
