Abstract

This painted wood sculpture was created in 1775, along with the wooden architectural membering of the altarpiece in which it stands, for the Chiesa Matrice in Putignano. The two flanking sculptures (St. Sebastian and St. Vitus) are from the Renaissance and made of painted stone and thus have very different, less attenuated proportions and evince a different type of classicism. St. Caesarius was an early Christian martyr, killed in the persecutions of Diocletian. Photograph(s) licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.
