Abstract

Science fiction emerged as a full-fledged genre in the early 20th century in specialized magazines, known as the "pulps" for their cheap wood pulp paper. It was a genre defined by male editors and writers who held immense sway over popular visions of the future. Women's contributions to this "Golden Era" of science fiction are often overlooked. What were women's visions of the future in the early years of science fiction? How did women navigate the male-dominated publishing industry? Future Female investigates and celebrates women's substantial contributions to early science fiction as writers, artists, editors, and journalists.
