Abstract
Research on educational games has identified potential benefits from use in the classroom, particularly to student motivation. The adoption of these games in classrooms, however, encounters barriers such as the content of an educational game not adhering to curriculum requirements or national standards. In this thesis, we present ScriptAR, a no-code tool designed to support the creation of game-based stories without needing technical expertise. We describe a design process created for ScriptAR that makes the creation of stories in an educational game a design task instead of a technical implementation task. We investigate the existing opinions of teachers on educational games and their customization through a user study with ten teacher candidates with in-class teaching experience. Teacher candidates were successful in creating their own short stories based on provided reference information, with the majority of their time being spent on storytelling tasks. Additional findings include that teacher candidates viewed modification as a way to make a game more relevant to their classroom, and that creating digital stories could be used as a project for students.
