Abstract

In this lunette on the façade of San Paolino in Florence, angels hold up a garland, which frames the Pandolfini coat of arms (three dolphins on a blue ground). The three coats of arms above are those of Pope Leo X, Cardinal Giuliano de' Medici, and the Capitolo Fiorentino. These probably later coats of arms are marble, whereas the lunette is glazed terracotta, which had the advantages of both being durable for outdoor use and having colour, which was an essential part of the heraldry of coats of arms. Therefore glazed terracotta coats of arms were popular in this period across Tuscany. Photograph(s) licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.
