Abstract

The tomb of Ettore Carafa was made in 1511 for the Cappella del Presepe in San Domenico in Naples. The tomb, on which traces of gilding and possibly paint are visible, is made of white marble. Above in the lunette is God the Father. The deceased appears twice, once life-sized lying in armor on atop the sarcophagus, and once in a relief sculpture behind the recumbent effigy, in which St. Dominic presents Ettore to the enthroned Madonna and Child. Classically-inspired grotesques ornament the monument, including music-playing tritons and putti on the sarcophagus.
