Abstract
This under-life-size crucifix (made out of painted wood) has been attributed to Giovanni Pisano himself after cleaning revealed the abraided original surface under many layers of heavy repaint. The restoration also returned the arms to their original y-shaped position. (They had been moved to fit a later T-shaped cross.) The cross here is modern. Before the cleaning, many scholars (including Lisner) considered it to be by a follower or pupil of Giovanni Pisano. In the pose, attenuated arms, hollow abdomen, leonine hair, fall of the loincloth, and facial features, it is very close to Giovanni Pisano's crucifixes, in particular the one in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, Siena, except that this example has less of a curve to the body. This crucifix comes from Sant'Agostino in Asciano, and is currently housed in the Museo d'Arte Sacra at Palazzo Corboli, Asciano.
