Abstract

This relief, made of marble, partially gilded with coloured glass inserts, is set into the elaborate nineteenth century Lombardi funereal monument in the wall of the Medici Chapel in Santa Croce in Florence. The composition is one known through multiple variants that may derive from a lost model by Donatello. The style of low relief, relievo schiacciato, was one pioneered by Donatello, who is known to have experimented with inserting pieces of coloured glass and other materials into his sculptures (for example in the Cantoria for Florence Cathedral, now in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo). Scholars disagree as to whether this is a Renaissance work or a nineteenth-century imitation. Photograph(s) licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.
