Abstract
Andrea Matteo III Aquaviva (1456-1528) was the son of Giulio Antonio Acquaviva and Caterina Orsini del Balzo. This sculpture of Andrea Matteo III is located in the church founded by his father, Santa Maria dell'Isola in Conversano. Both Andrea Matteo III and the companion sculpture of his wife, Caterina della Ratta Orante, are shown kneeling with hands clasped in prayer. They pay homage to the extravagant funerary monument Andrea Matteo III commissioned Nuzzo Barba to create for his parents. Andrea Matteo III chose to be portrayed in full armour, a reference to his occupation as a condottiere. The sculptures of Andrea Matteo III and his wife, as extensions of the funerary monument, are contemporaneous with its construction in the early 16th century. Although the sculptures are a part of the monument, they also represent a second temporal layer to it, existing not within the monument but rather as its contemporary spectators. The couple's depiction shows them in an act of perpetual veneration that also conveniently identified them for posterity as the monument's munificent patrons.
