Abstract

This painted terracotta bust of Christ, with a wooden halo, located today in the Museo Bandini in Fiesole, was created by the workshop of Benedetto da Maiano. This is one of many such terracotta busts of Christ produced by Verrocchio, his workshop, and his followers in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. The physical features of Christ are close to those of Verrocchio's bronze Christ (with the doubting Thomas at Orsanmichele). All of these images follow a description of Christ that was believed in the Renaissance to be written by an eye-witness and thus accurate.
