Abstract

St. Zenobius was venerated as the first bishop of Florence. This glazed terracotta lunette depicting the saint was created in 1496 was originally located above the door of the Compagnia di San Zanobi in the cathedral (currently housed in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo in Florence). The way in which Andrea has rendered the figures - their gravity - has been linked to the political and religious atmosphere of Savonarolan Florence at the time of the creation of this work.
