Abstract

According to the church signage in Santa Maria la Nova in Naples, this is a funeral mask of S. Giacomo della Marca, made from a cast taken from the saint's face three days after his death in 1476. Certainly, doing life and death masks of prominent people was a practice done in this period, and this work appears to have been made from a death mask. However, no documents attest to the existence of this death mask portrait of the saint until the nineteenth century.
