Abstract

This richly polychromed and gilded image half-length sculpture of San Miniato (in San Miniato al Monte, Florence) was long thought to be made of terracotta and was published as such, but it is in fact a painted wood sculpture. This is an example of the difficulty in identifying the underlying sculptural material in well-preserved fully polychromed sculptures, and the ways in which artists used different media in parallel ways.
