Abstract

Paola da Cassano's Madonna and Child, created in 1535, is located at the primary altar of the Chapel of the Lady of Constantinople in the Cathedral of Altamura. The Madonna's face shows influence of Francesco Laurana, while the drapery of her dress is done in the style typically seen in Abruzzo and Marche. The base of the sculpture remains unpainted, due to the death of the artist. Photos of the sculpture in some scholarship reveals that crowns were placed at one point atop the heads of the Madonna and Child, although they have evidently been removed today. A copy of this Madonna and Child by the workshop of Paolo da Cassano exists at the Church of Santa Maria la Veterana.
