Abstract

This carved stone baptismal font by an unknown artist dates to the 1560s. It is located in the first chapel on the left off the central nave in the Chiesa di San Nicola, Mola di Bari. The base of the font features dancing angels that hold up the basin. The Sebenicese origin of its artist is ascertained by its striking similarity to the baptismal font made earlier in the century by Galeazzo Alessi for the Sebenico Cathedral in Croatia. The eyes of at least one angel seem to have dark pupils, raising this question of whether this work was originally partly polychromed.
