Abstract

This 16th-century Madonna and Child by an unknown artist is currently located in the cloister of the Franciscan convent attached to the church of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria, although this was not the sculpture's original location. The Madonna, standing upon a pedestal, holds the Christ Child in her left arm. The positioning of Christ's hands suggests that a rosary could have been strung between them. With her right hand, the Madonna draws her bright blue mantle before her, creating visual interest in the fabric's drapery. Both she and Christ wear white robes decorated in delicate flowers and trimmed in gold. Photograph(s) licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.
