Abstract

The tomb of Neapolitan courtier, knight, and writer Diomede Carafa is in a particularly prestigious location, in the Cappellone of San Domenico in Naples, originally right next to the miraculous painted crucifix that is thought by believers to have spoken to St. Thomas Aquinas. (Now a copy of the miraculous painting is in this chapel.) The fifteenth-century marble monument has surviving traces of selective gilding and painting. The lamb of God stands on top of the monument, with the Annunciation relief in the tympanum, the effigy of Diomede lying on his sarcophagus, virtues in niches, and, on the lowest level, a bench.
