Abstract

This small Ecce Homo statue of Christ is one of a pair depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ, made of painted wood in the 17th century. The statues flank a large crucifix in the last chapel on the left side of the central nave of San Francesco d'Assisi in Matera. Christ's hands are bound with rope, and his arms are crossed over his chest. The gold loincloth and cape pick up on the gold used in its matching statue and the crucifix, providing a sense of narrative continuity to the chapel.
