Abstract

The polychrome marble and stucco ciborium of Santa Maria in Traspontina in Rome was designed by Carlo Fontana (1638–1714) and consecrated in 1674. Commissioned by the General of the Carmelites, Matteo Orlando, the altar exemplifies Baroque grandeur. At the top, four stucco angels, sculpted by Leonardo Retti (d. 1714), support the structure’s crowning element. The statues at the base are believed to have been added a few years later.
