Abstract
MIL-STD-1553 avionics communications bus is a commonly used communications protocol in many internal vehicle communication networks. Despite its common use, there are no standardized methods of protecting these systems from dedicated threat actors. In this work, I am proposing a solution to generate realistic data related to possible attacks, and to defend against them. First, I will outline the protocol and explain the history of how widely used the protocol has become. Second, I will describe a new simulator capable of accurately representing a variety of attacks against the MIL-STD-1553 communications bus. Third, I will describe a model architecture to identify malicious traffic using the output from the simulator. Finally, I will compare the results of the new model against a variety of other models that have been tested in previous literature.
