Abstract

On the right side of the main altar in Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo in Ariccia is a smaller-than-life-size polychrome wood crucifix. A sign in the church attributes the sculpture to the circle of Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598–1680), who designed the church between 1661 and 1665. The crucifix, carved in the Baroque style, may date to the late seventeenth or eighteenth century. It shows visible damage from woodworm infestation, and parts of the wood appear charred—likely due to prolonged exposure to smoke or oil lamps.
