Abstract

This glazed terracotta altarpiece has been housed in the Medici Chapel in Santa Croce since the nineteenth century but was originally made for a different location, San Francesco in Montecarlo (near San Giovanni Valdarno). It was made at the behest of the Compagnia di Castel San Giovanni. This provincial commission does not seem to have been a priority, as the while some scholars suggest that Andrea had a hand in sculpting the central figures, the much smaller saints seem to be the product of Andrea's workshop.
