Abstract

This fourteenth-century painted wood sculpture of St. John the Baptist in San Giovanni Maggiore in Naples shows the saint wearing his camel skin cloak and pointing heavenward. The figure is rather flat and hieratic, more like an icon than a sculpture. In 1950 the sculpture was reported to have undergone restoration, which removed later paint layers but left intact 17th-century repaint. IT is not clear whether the sculpture has undergone conservation since. Photograph(s) licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License
