Abstract

This thesis is concerned with the relation between death and contemporary forms of curation which can be said to be moving into more temporary formats. As a component of the project, an installation of the artist Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook was made public at the Art and Media Lab at the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts to explore the ideas put forward in this thesis. The installation, entitled Living Image, sought to affirm the concepts of imperfection, change, and mortality in relation to curation. I claim that Rasdjarmrearnsook’s work The Class is able to reveal an authentic temporality which acknowledges the human horizon of death. Through curating this work, I was interested in exploring the concept of the technological framing of the museum which rejects, or manipulates, the flow of time by concealing death and positing stable and historicist approaches towards artworks.
