Abstract

The Sarcophagus of Raimondello Orsini del Balzo (1361-1406) is located on the left side of the Presbytery in Santa Caterina, Galatina. Raimondello founded the church at the end of the 14th century. His sarcophagus was likely originally placed at the high altar, and moved after it was badly damaged by a lightning strike in 1867. Two angels pull back curtains carved from stone to reveal Raimondello, barefoot and dressed in Franciscan robes, resting peacefully in his final sleep. Above, a second sculpture of Raimondello kneels in prayer over the scene. The design was later copied for the sarcophagus of his son, Giovanni Antonio Orsini del Balzo, located in the octagonal apse of the same church.
